An unfortunate occurence

Late this afternoon I went out to the garage to put something in our freezer. Much to my puzzlement I discovered that the outlet it is plugged into had been tripped somehow and the freezer had been off. I don't know how long it had been off, but things were pretty much thawed, but still very cold. After a quick consultation call to my mom, I realized that I had a whole lot of cooking to do. So in a desperate attempt to salvage at least some of the food, I've been cooking for hours. This frantic, disorganized fit of domesticity was somewhat hampered by a toddler who just wanted someone to play with him. Poor little thing. He spent his evening watching Sesame Street. I offered him two different options for dinner, which I thought was very generous of me. He turned his nose up at both of them, so much for an improved appetite. Basically he had a cookie for dinner, which looked something like this:

Not my proudest mothering moment.
Midway through this cooking fiesta I realized I was short a few ingredients. I loaded Mitchell in the car to head to the Quik-e-Mart in the desperate hope that they might actually have what I was looking for. In a fun twist, at this exact moment there arose a freak desert thunderstorm, which involved hurricane force winds, sideways rain, and angry lightning. We nearly blew away entering the store, and enjoyed a power outage while we were there. Luckily by the time we got home the storm had pretty much blown itself out, resulting in this lovely scene over my house:

It was the first full rainbow I've seen in a long time. Sadly, I did not have time to search for any pots of gold. You know, cooking to do. The rain resulted in some dirty puddles, which led to this:

After much persuasion Mitchell went to bed, and here I am still cooking. I'm currently waiting for a pot roast to finish Crock Potting.
Due to the various contents of my freezer here are my accomplishments for the evening:
-two pot roasts
-5 pounds of ground beef cooked
-two batches of blueberry muffins
-two batches of cookies
-large pot of chicken noodle soup
-tortillas
-12 billion dishes washed
Really, that list looks pretty darn short, I feel like I've been cooking forever! How pathetic. Sadly, I wasn't able to save everything, some things had to be tossed, that didn't feel very good. Luckily the freezer hasn't been fully restocked since we got back from Virginia, so it wasn't at full capacity. On a happy note, this will save me some cooking in the future!

Good post, although I'm sorry about your cooking. Not the loss, just the cooking. That is the real tragedy, I know. BUt good for you for calling on your inner Martha and fixing it all the best you could.

And...many a child has survived on one cookie a day!

so are you going to trust the freezer with all of the cooked offerings now?

You poor girl! What a way to ruin a perfectly good day (and some food, it seems). :(
