Hey my more experienced mommy friends! At what age did your child stop taking naps? How did you know they were ready to give it up? I'll keep fighting him on it if I have to, but it's getting old.

Mason was around 3 when he gave up his nap, but I continued to give him a "quiet time" in his room. It worked out pretty good. Sometimes he would fall asleep, sometimes he'd read books or play quietly. Either way I got my rest and he didn't fight it knowing he was going in his room for his "break" instead of a "nap."
ditto to the Lisa comment....Caroline is 4 and still has to play quietly in her room until Lila wakes up. Sometimes I'll save her tv time for a movie during this time too...Mama needs a break, afterall!
Just kid proof his room, give him some board books or such, and say adios until a timer goes off---usually 1.5-2 hours for us!
Though I certainly don't qualify as a "more experienced mommy friend," because I swear to you, the more kids I have, the LESS I KNOW, but I second the quiet time in room concept. Nathan did it like a DREAM. And I think you can tell when they're ready for no naps when something else is worse than not having a nap. .. .. Bet that doesn't make sense. Like, Cody had been staying awake until 10. We put kids to bed between 7 and 7:30, so 10 was seriously not cutting it. That was more annoying to me than letting him go without a nap, so I chopped the nap and now he begs for bed at 6. It works out. Oh, it's still crummy because their little bodies still actually do need the sleep, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Simon had to do the 1 hr quiet time through his year 3. He felt like he was winning because he could choose just to be quiet instead of arguing over a nap. Still once or twice a week he'd fall asleep anyway. My girls have been more like Beth-o's Cody: after age two if you give them a nap they're up til 11.
I don't think I've remembered to do quiet time for a few years now. Kudos to Jayna on that one. Maybe she'll come nanny 911 here. Or I'll try it myself since I'm single parenting this week. Is this MY blog? I just keep talking!
I didn't read the other comments. I'm guessing someone already said this but I would go totally by mood. If he doesn't get a nap and he isn't cranky because of it then he doesn't need naps. Jade would fall asleep on the floor or be a complete terror if she didn't get one. So even though she doesn't want a nap she still needs it.
