Adventuring

Last time I went to our wee little local library I found a book that featured random, interesting facts about Arizona. Lee and I were looking through it and discovered that just mere miles from our house there exists what is, and I quote, "possibly the world's largest saguaro". The author touted this cactus as a 47 armed monster that had been growing in the desert for decades, if not centuries. How have we lived here for a year and not known there was a 47 armed behemoth on our doorstep? Obviously something that had to be investigated! So we loaded Mitchell into the car to see the 'cacus' as he calls them. Of course, I brought the camera to document the marvel, and to have an awesome pic to blog about. We followed the author's directions, drove the required 3.5 miles, and saw......nothing, except some lousy ordinary saguaros. So we thought, maybe his directions were a little too vague, and he meant 3.5 miles the other way, and off we went into the desert. We travelled 3.5 miles past rotted out mining equipment, scary skull and crossbones signs warning us about gaping mine shafts, and more lousy little saguaros. Once again...nothing. So either the directions were exceptionally misleading, or in the 5 years since the book was published this saguaro was carried off by aliens. Yes, aliens are the only reasonable explanation, even if it had died, it's remains would still be there. Gotta say, I was a little disappointed. No cool picture, no interesting blog post. Oh well, we got out of the house, and Mitchell was happy with the 'cacuses' he saw, even if they did only have 2 arms.

Well, thanks for the attempt to entertain us all with a picture of a large cactus. :) Sounds like it would have been pretty cool.

Ahh I'm kinda sad now. I scrolled quickly to see the picture but it wasn't there. *sigh* Cool to find the mine though. Hey and you guys always have the naked guy.

That's a fun family outing anyways!

I think 2 armed "cacuses" are just as exciting. It's nice to have these little adventures.

that's a pretty amazing story. i feel like you should write to the author or a letter to the editor of your local paper or something.

That vaugely reminds me of times my dad would take us out in the middle of the desert to go rock hounding based on a 20-year-old book. Of course after 20 years half the state has visited the place and the good stuff was gone. We always left empty handed. :( Better luck on your next adventure!
