I'm the mean mom

Mitchell has recently started piano lessons. And oh how tired I am of it all! Over the summer my friend, Alyssa decided that she would start teaching piano. Since we're homeschooling this year I thought it would be a good experience for Mitchell to have a teacher that wasn't me. I asked him what he thought about the idea, he said he wanted to give it a try. He said he wanted to! Granted his decision was probably influenced by the fact that after his lesson he gets to stay and play with his best bud Connor. Now we're a few weeks into it and piano is becoming a dirty word around this house. Oh the weeping and wailing when it's time to practice or do his theory book. I'm tired of being the wicked witch! So, I'm coming to that place where I have a choice to make. Do we plug along, forcing him to do something he doesn't really want to do? Aren't we supposed to be teaching him the importance of not quitting, and giving something a chance, and developing talents? Or do we throw in the towel and do a happy dance that we don't have to fight about it anymore? I really feel like he needs to stick with it a little longer, but I'm not really sure what a little longer really means for us. I can only put up with this face for so long.

Poor creature. My parents went the build character and force talents route. BUT, they also started me when I was 8, feeling like this gave me the needed maturity... no advice from me. Sorry. But I like the new blog look (Jayna?)

I think he's a bit young. In my mothering experience, they don't really pick it up and get into it where you can MAKE them do it until around 6 1/2 or 7. That's my two cents. Do a gymnastics class instead! His face is classic! Good on you for snapping that pic!

I guess I would vote for the wait until he's older option. I know what it feels like to be the Mean Mom, I was a good one for a lot of years as you'll recall. I did let you out of piano lessons if you will recall - of course you went in to violin....maybe give him some time? Or play your violin for him to inspire him???

That is funny. I started Jade a month ago. It's super casual though. If I take it too seriously she will literally run from the piano so I just grab little learning moments where I can. I try to explain the doggy ears every time and how to find the C key next to them. I agree with Jayna. They are really young for it. It helps she likes to watch me practice.
