Yankee Doodle

The fourth of July dawned much like any other day this year. Our planned fourth of July festivities were pretty tame, maybe a little ice cream and some firework viewing. Then around 4:30, I felt a contraction. When I went into labor with Mitchell my water broke and I didn't have any contractions until they started me on Pitocin at the hospital, and that pretty much coincided with getting an epidural. So, I had no experience with going into labor. That first contraction was followed 20 minutes later by another one. I've heard that it's possible to have contractions for days before going into labor, or to have contractions start and stop. So, I thought we'd wait it out a bit, and that was my doctor's advice as well. Extremely shortly thereafter they were coming five minutes apart and I figured we should start our nearly two hour drive to the hospital. By the time we were nearing town the contractions were right on top of each other, and that made me worried, because that just seemed so soon for them to be so close together. We contemplated calling an ambulance, requesting a police escort, possibly a helicopter to fly me the heck out of there. We finally made it to the hospital, where Lee's mom met us to get Mitchell. I hobbled into a wheelchair and they ran me down to L&D triage. The nurse informed me that I was fully dilated, and the baby was on his way out. And that is where my little world fell apart, because when you're fully dilated, it's too late for an epidural. Natural childbirth was not something I ever considered, I'm a fully medicated kind of girl. So the nurse rushed me down the hall, yelling for Lee to come along and warning me not to push. We made it to a labor room and the nurses were scurrying frantically to get the room ready, and still telling me not to push because there was no doctor. At that point I knew there were no drugs coming and the only way to stop all of this was to push, so I decided that I didn't really care if there was a doctor or not. The doctor showed up pretty quickly and mere moments later, Samuel Merrill was born. So all told, from start of labor to delivery was 5 and a half hours. He weighed 9 lbs 1 oz and is 22 inches long. So far he is a very good baby, and everyone seems to be adjusting pretty well. Mitchell was a little shy at first, but he seems to be warming up to Sam, although he has told me a few times that the baby is a monkey. That's okay, we like monkeys around here.

What??? What? What are you saying to me? Are you saying you went au naturale? Are you saying that you had a baby on the 4th of July? That's quite the story.

Congratulations to everyone! Monkeys and all! :)

I still can't believe you went so fast and you almost delivered on the side of the road. I love this story. Congrats again, he's very cute!

Congrats again! I don't think I ever want to experience childbirth without medication. It hurts even with it! Good work Kels-dog. You are my hero.

Hooray! He's a handsome little guy. And his birth is quite the story. :) Good work! Glad you're both doing well.

I am alarmed AND horrified at this story. When jayna told me I almost peed my pants FOR you. No epidural? NO EPIDURAL? AND he weighed over NINE POUNDS?

I cant believe that a dingo almost really did eat your baby. on the side of the road. with NO epidural.

Not to mention the fact that you could have given birth in the 'small world' or even on a pirate ship for that matter at DISNEYLAND a mere few days prior to this birthing incident! all in all, I think you were pretty lucky to make it to the hospital!

Sooo congratulations - I love the name sam, AND I personally vote him very extremely cute.

congrats!!!!

i know what you mean, hobbling to a wheelchair and having the nurses scramble and wishing they'd just let you have that baby because it's in no mood to wait. good job you did it all!

so, is he really a 4th baby? yes, i guess 4:30 plus 5.5 is still on the 4th. my bro-in-law has that birthday and he always thought or was told the fireworks were for him. :)

Woohoo! What a 4th of July. Congratulations and if there is such a thing as mommy brownie points you just racked up a million. I pray I have a very boring story to tell about the birth of our little one compared to yours. Congrats on your cutie!

You are the wind beneath my wings.

He's perfect. You're perfectly fine.

I am perfectly thrilled for you.

Await the delivery of muchos books- the nursing one is an UPDATED version of my older one, so hopefully all of the naked boobs will be 1990's boobs/hair, and not 1980's boobs/hair.

Congratulations! What an incredible story! He looks sooooooo big. He was ready to stretch out those long legs. I was cracking up at how much the boys look alike. Love the middle name by the way. Only one letter off from us! Enjoy your new little fam.

Congrats Kelsey and family. I am sorry you had to do things the natural way. You have convinced me to always live within a manageable distance of a hospital. I don't think I am tough enough for that kind of experience. He is cute, and looks very similar to Mitchell. Hope everyone is settling in.

That is quite a story. I think that is the exact thing Troy is terrified of and is the reason he decided (during the second month of pregnancy, I might add) that he's sending me away days before I'm due to sit in a hotel in the same town as our hospital. Crazy boy.

You are quite the woman and Sam is a very handsome boy. Congrats!
