Yesterday was the first annual 'Spouse's Day' at Lee's station. I was somewhat reluctant to go, after three years of this job I pretty much feel like I know what's going on, and it was supposed to be like an 8 hour day. It's been a good long while since I had to do anything for 8 hours straight. Being a mother has given me a short attention span. However, I did want to see where he works, and meet some of the people I hear all these stories about. So off I went. I was kind of nervous. Socializing is not my thing, and this was going to be a roomful of people I didn't know. Not only that, but I am almost never around adults my age anymore. My church social contact is all elderly people and then I have a few select friends that are of my generation. I'm pretty sure I don't really know how to talk to people born after 1970 anymore. So I nervously scooted in the door and found a seat. Somewhere along the way I did manage to bump into the table and knock a mug onto the floor, making a lot of racket and drawing attention to my pregnancy clumsy self. But, I persevered and started a conversation with the stranger next to me. My mom would have been so proud. Me talking to a stranger all by myself. The next four hours were pretty much spent in that chair. They had various people talk to us about various different work related things, some of it boring, and much of it stuff I already knew. It was good to see the supervisor that Lee is always complaining about, and to see that I would complain about him too. And it was nice to get something of an idea of where he works. They didn't do a tour of the station, how dumb is that? That's what I was looking forward to. I left at lunch because they didn't really seem to have much planned after that, and I was done sitting. All in all, I'm glad I went. I got a little better understanding of his work environment, and got to spend some time with some women who understand what it's like to be a law enforcement wife. My favorite 'wife' moment was when they were all outraged that their husbands didn't have more guns more readily available. They seem to want them all walking around with a small arsenal attached to their person. It was funny, most other groups of women I know would be worried that their husbands had to carry even one gun daily, but these guys wanted more firepower. I guess being a law enforcement wife takes a special kind of craziness.
While I was gone, my living room looked like this, complete with coffee table fort.
And this is Mitchell's reaction to Lee telling him it's time to take a nap. This is how he reacts to all things he doesn't want to hear.

I read this whole thing. I usually skip long ones like this. Spouse day sounds fun. Wish all jobs had that day.
I am proud of you for talking to a complete stranger - but I hope you didn't take any candy from her.
Mitchell looks like I feel and I remember my living room looking like that when I got home and Dad was "babysitting".
how cute! i cant believe thats mitchell! hes so big!
The gun thing made me laugh. I'm imagining border patrol Rambos. Oh and talking to a stranger always gets you brownie points in my book. Just as long as they are not too strange.
I am super impressed. I hate any situation where I am forced to make small talk with strangers and that sounds like an event I would have skipped all together. You did well. I love the picture of Mitchell too. He's a real two year old now.
